Police investigate principal's prank

Goddard school district police will investigate a prank initiated by an elementary school principal last week to see if any laws have been broken.

Amelia Earhart Elementary principal Natalie Rust had relatives touring the school after classes had let out last Wednesday, and she asked a staff member to announce over the school intercom that "suspicious characters" were in the building, district spokeswoman Annette Singletary said.

When Rust learned teachers were still in the school, Singletary said, she had the staff member announce that the situation was "all clear" and later that it had been a prank. Singletary said school officials have addressed the matter with Rust.

Acting on the advice of the district's attorney, police will explore the incident "to determine if there was criminal act or intent," Singletary said. The Goddard school district's police department comprises fully commissioned law enforcement officers.

The results of that investigation will then be forwarded to the Sedgwick County district attorney's office.

"We're not saying that there is something (criminal) that happened," Singletary said. "We don't know. There needs to be a police investigation to make sure."
